Photography… It’s all about “Timing”, right!

Today is Sunday. Not quite in the mood to socialize. Would say, it’s a welcome break. Just lazing around in my room thinking about the days bygone… The days I had just about started to talk about photography to the world… post “Better Photography (magazine)” and pre “The Times Journal of Photography (magazine)” days.

I remember, one day Amrita called, “Ritam, how about doing a twelve part series on photography for the Times’ photography monthly?”

The idea of sharing more ideas and opinions with the world of photo enthusiasts sounded exciting. It seemed easy. A two-to-four pager a month didn’t appear to be too much to ask myself, especially, after having quit “Better Photography” a while ago.

It was also a Sunday. The wee hours of Sunday… one in the morning… I was on the comp, at home… and ‘THE IDEA’ dawned.

P-H-O-T-O-G-R-A-P-H-Y… had eleven letters…
An article a month for twelve months was all the need…
How about making an article around each of the eleven alphabets of PHOTOGRAPHY and one to introduce the series, I thought.

Eureka! And the series was ready…

Twelve hours on the comp, at a stretch, led me to discover a new meaning in PHOTOGRAPHY…

P for PERCEPTION (of the medium).
H for HOW(to take good pictures)?
O for OBSERVATION.
T for THEMES & TYPES (of Photography).
O for OPPORTUNITIES (‘photo-opps’ as they say).
G for GEARS & GADGETS (to use to get the desired images).
R for REALIZING THE COMMON PICTURE-TAKING MISTAKES.
A for APPRECIATION & ANNALYSIS (of good work and the not so good ones).
P for PRESENTATION (of a photographer’s portfolio).
H for HANDLING THE BUSINESS OF PHOTOGRAPHY.
Y for YOURSELF (that’s all about designing & defining ones own style).

My one-year commitment got met in one night. Photography, after all, is all about timing, right! ☺
